Outfit of the Day!

So here's what I wore to work today (I had a nicely buttoned-up cardigan on top, I'm not that ridiculous), and I got creeped on excessively on the way home.  So it must be a good outfit!  Jk.  Kinda.


Dress: Forever21, belt: vintage, boots: Frye, sunglasses: Ray-Ban.




The print on this dress is really fun.  My belt is doing weird things.  And no, I did not wear those sunglasses inside.  I'm not crazy.  I am really feeling sundresses and cowboyish boots, though, which I'm sure surprises no one.  Apparently I secretly want to be Taylor Swift (I bet that doesn't surprise anyone either).


So that's that.  Sorry I've failed at blogging this week.  My iPhoto got all kinds of messed up when I switched computers, so I haven't been able to upload pictures :( but I think I fixed it!  I think.

Modern Wayfarers

So I bought myself a birthday present.  I'm really good at doing that.  In fact, I do it year-round.  Aha.  Anyways, I got myself some Ray-Ban sunglasses, and they finally came, so of course I had to take pictures of myself wearing them and making silly faces and blog about it.


#1: see, we're doing pretty well, I'm making a normal face (which I totally struggle with that close to a mirror).  #2: I can't resist the urge to make silly fish faces.  Ever.  Cute.  I know.




These are the Modern Wayfarers from Ray-Ban in brown.  Now, I've had bad luck with Ray-Bans.  My aviators fell apart, and my Wayfarers were always way too big, and also fell apart.  But Shopbop has a great return policy and free shipping, so I took the plunge.  They're a sturdy plastic frame with gradient lenses.  What I loved right off the bat is that these fit very firmly on my face.  They aren't slipping off.  I could probably go running in them.  They're a nice, warm dark brown, which I find a lot more flattering than black.




My favorite part, though, is the shape.  They're an updated Wayfarer, meaning that they're a slightly larger lens with a more rectangular shape instead of the usual circular.  Plus they go out more at the temples for a slight cat-eye effect, which I love (so sassy!).  I think the more rectangular frames are much more flattering on my rounder face.  They still have the iconic Wayfarer look, but with a bit of a Jackie O twist.  Overall I'm super pleased with this purchase.  I've been wearing them every day, and have gotten a ton of compliments.

Outfit of the Day (In My Head)

Sorry for not blogging yesterday, y'all.  It was my birthday!  I'm 20.  I feel old.  It's freaking me out not to be a teenager anymore.  Ack.  Anyways, here's what I wish I was wearing today (and what I actually wore at the bottom):

 Cool as Icing Dress, $79.99 at modcloth.com, Ray-Ban Modern Wayfarers, $139 at shopbop.com: Ahhh this is dress is so cute.  It reminds me of a Taylor Swift music video, but less corny.  The cut is extremely flattering--anything fitted through the torso and waist like that will emphasize the smallest part of you, and the slightly flared skirt creates an hourglass silhouette without overemphasizing what's already there.  And then you have the adorable detailing, with the cutout geometric and lace shapes.  It's a bit like those paper Day of the Dead garlands, but wearable.  I'd do a cute little sundress like that one with sassy, big sunglasses.  I actually just got these for myself for my birthday (they should be here in a day or two!  Yipee).  The soft brown of the shades works nicely with the sweetness of the dress.  I really love the shape of these glasses.  It's a little retro-cat-eye/sassy, and has the same classic but modern feel as the original Wayfarers, but the shape isn't as round, so they'll work better on rounder faces.  I have a squareish-oval (squoval?) face, so round sunglasses just make my face look rounder, whereas more rectangular frames like these are more flattering.  The inverse works if you have a really angular face, rounder sunglasses can soften that up.



Club Monaco Harper Braided Belt, $79.99 at shopbop.com, Frye Kara Trapunto T Strap, $159.60 at zappos.com: I belt everything.  I'd add a belt here for some visual contrast.  The skinny belt works because it doesn't detract from or cover-up the intricate detailing at the waist, and the warm brown and homey vibe of the braid go perfectly with the rustic, simple feel of the dress.  Ahhh I also want these shoes.  I can't justify buying them, but aren't they so sweet?  I love the idea of daytime heels.  These feel so sweet and retro with the t-straps and the soft brown leather, but the platform and chunky heel add a bit of sass.  All in all these heels would add a little height and glamour, but still keep the overall vibe down-to-earth.




And here's what I actually wore today: the shirt is from H&M, the skirt is Ann Taylor Loft, the belt is vintage, the necklace is Forever21, and the sandals are Franco Sarto.  Yayyy for work-appropriate outfits.

Currently Loving: My New Pendant Necklace

It's a four-day weekend, y'all.  FOUR DAYS.  And you know what I'm going to be doing?  Sleeping.  Lots of sleep.  I miss sleep.  We haven't hung out in a while.  Anyways, one of the things I'm going to be wearing a lot this weekend is this new tassel pendant necklace I was sent by Spring Street.  I totally love it.


It's a long necklace with a 36" gold chain, an adjustable clasp, a circle covered in geometric crystals, and a large tassel.  It's a very heavy, solid feeling necklace.  You can get it on their website for $45.  I love tassel necklaces.  I bought one a while ago but it fell apart, and I've been meaning to get a new one for a while now.  This one is perfect.  It looks and feels expensive, and has a fun mixture of textures and finishes, with the crystal, black bead, chains, embossed metal, etc, etc.  The chain tassels hang so nicely, and they have great movement, too.  It all has a very exotic feel.  Also I love anything shiny, so...




My favorite way to wear a statement necklace like this one is with a simpler outfit, so that the necklace gets to stand out more and it doesn't all look too busy.  Here I'm wearing it with a Madewell tank, a vintage cardigan, and J. Crew shorts.  You could also wear it with jeans, boots, and a black tee, or with jeans and a white button-down and boots, or it would look adorable with a simple LBD.  You have a lot of different options.

Another Sundress and MAC Shy Girl Lipstick

Someone needs to lock me in my house and keep me from shopping.  For serious.  I just bought my fifth dress in a week.  Gah.  It is super cute though.


Forever21 Pleated Floral Dress, $19.90 at forever21.com: It's hard to tell in my terrible pictures, but it's a light mint green with coral flowers.  Worn with vintage cardigan and belt and Frye boots.  I really like this dress because it's a fun color (and one I don't have in my closet), it's light, cheap, and easy to wear, and the back is smocked, so it will fit a range of sizes.  I got a medium because I have a larger chest, but if you have a normal sized chest I think it runs a little big.  The colors are a little unconventional, and I think that helps modernize the floral print.  Also I would totally collect retro sundresses if I could.  But like really.  I know I wear these same boots with everything, but I think they balance out the super girly sundress nicely, and the cardigan adds a little coverage.




In other news, I BOUGHT A LIPSTICK!  That actually has never happened.  Like never.  I've wanted a nude-ish lippie for a while now, but lipstick scares me.  That might be funny from someone who wears significant amounts of black gel liner everyday, but lipstick...lipstick is intense.  It requires so much more patience and thought in selecting shades.  But I know it's silly that I avoid lipstick altogether, so I put a toe in the pool by picking up a nude lippie.  The SA (sales associate for y'all that don't know the lingo) at MAC recommended Shy Girl to me. The MAC website describes it as a creamy neutral coral beige, and it's a cremesheen finish, which means that it's a creamy lipstick with a glossy finish.  It came out a little brighter and lighter in the photos than in real life.




My lips are naturally pretty pigmented and sort of a medium pinkish red, so this is lighter than my natural lip color by just a bit.  I really wanted something that would lighten up my lip color without making me look like a zombie, and Shy Girl is perfect for that.  On me it comes across as a peachy-pink nude with the TINIEST hint of shimmer, and it is absolutely gorgeous.  It lightens my lips just enough to be noticeable, and the hint of peach is really pretty and summery.  It goes on very creamy and pigmented in one stroke, and it has a pretty decent lasting power--about 3-4 hours--without lip liner.  It has a very slight vanilla scent but no discernible taste, and the packaging is classic MAC, very simple and sleek.  All in all, I love this.  It's right in my comfort zone, it doesn't dry out my lips or settle into my lip lines, and the color is lovely.  For reference I'm NW15 at MAC, so very pale and on the warmer side of neutral.




Awkward Chic rating: A-.  I wish it lasted a bit longer and that it wasn't $14.50, but in terms of color and formula I LOVE IT.

Outfit of the Day

This is kind of a lie, because I didn't wear real clothes today (I went to the gym but I don't think that counts), but this is what I would have worn today...if I had gone out in public and not just watched the Masterpiece Theater version of Sense & Sensibility all day.  What a crazy life I have.


The dress I picked up at H&M over the weekend for about $35, the belt is vintage, and so are the cardigan and the necklace, and the boots are Frye.  The dress is definitely on the girly, ruffly side for me, but I've been watching a ton of True Blood, and am totally craving ruffly, Southern sundresses.  The print is pink and red and white and a little '70s/'80s, and it has ruffles on the tank sleeves, and down the faux-wrap on the front.  The waist of the dress had an orange tie, which I took off, because the waist of the dress is higher than my natural waist.  So I did what I did with the last H&M dress and made the waist lower by belting it.  Easy solutions!  It's hard to see, but the belt is a woven leather, which goes with the beachy vibe of the dress, and it adds a nice weight to the ruffly, floatiness of the dress.  I added the navy cardigan for warmth and contrast, the vintage necklace for a bit of edge, and the boots for a little sassiness.  And yes, I do wear those boots with everything.  I should get another pair.  Hm.  I like that idea.  Also I gots me a haircut!  It totally looks the same.




Here's a close-up with the vintage necklace I'm wearing.  I got it from my late and very awesome great-aunt.  I think it's art deco, and it's completely epic.  I love statement necklaces.  They're so easy to wear, but they add a lot of visual impact.  Plus vintage statement necklaces don't generally look like anything else on the market, so you can get a really unique twist on an outfit.




On a totally unrelated side note, I made the best chai simple syrup today for my morning black tea.  You simmer 1 part sugar with 1 part water (I do 1 cup and 1 cup) until the sugar dissolves, and then I added a tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice, which has cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and cardamom and stirred until that dissolved.  Those aren't the exact spices used in chai, but when you add that syrup to black tea with some milk it tastes pretty darn close to a chai tea latte.

Feelin' Nautical

Here is installment #2 of what I got this past weekend/what I wore today.  The weather in SoCal has been terrible (it was like ominous, apocalyptic-status storm clouds all day today) but in pure defiance and because I've been--slightly--immune to the cold, I wore this striped little number today.


Before I say anything else, guess how much it cost.  Just guess.  It was FIFTEEN DOLLARS at H&M.  That's ridiculous.  For a dress?  Ridiculous.  Sure, it doesn't look like it was $300 but I'd have guessed $60, which is four times as much as it actually was.  Which sounds pretty good to me.  Here I'm wearing it with a Forever21 necklace, a vintage belt, and Frye boots.




I know horizontal stripes can be tricky, but they just felt so fresh and nautical today and I had to wear them.  So there.  I also think having such a defined waist with the belt can keep the horizontal stripes from making you look wider, as does showing a little leg.  I actually got this dress for work this summer because it's not too short and it isn't too lowcut, and I can wear it with a little cardigan.  I did the necklace to add a fun, whimsical twist and the boots to add a little weight to the overall look.  One interesting thing with this dress though is that it had a built in waist-tie a good 2 or 3 inches above where I belted it.  I can't do empire-waisted things.  They do not work when you have any semblance of a hip (and I have many semblances).  So I cut the waist tie off and belted it where my natural waist is instead.  Yay for problem solving!  If you're like me and your natural waist is higher or lower than most other peoples', you can use that trick a lot.


I also got this top from Madewell like two weeks ago and totally forgot to blog about it.  It's on the Madewell website for $29.99, but I got it in white from the store for $8.  So cheap!  Definitely go check out your local Madewell to see if they have better sale prices than the website.  I like this tank because it's simple and clean but it has the defined waist tie, which is crazy flattering, especially if you're like me and have a large chest, which tends to push tees away from your body and drown your waist.  It's just a really versatile top that you can dress up and down, for a great price.

I Blame Blogger

Sooooo last week was a failure.  I'll take the blame for Tuesday and Wednesday because I was moving out of my dorm and flying home to LA, but Thursday and Friday Blogger was totally down and I couldn't log in, so not my fault!  Stupid blogger.  One day I will switch to Tumblr.  One day.  When I become less lazy.


In the meantime, I did some shopping at H&M over the weekend.  I'll share the rest of what I got with y'all over the week, but first up is this blush pink top (totally the color I want to paint my room).  It was like $15, and it's a slouchy, slightly off-the-shoulder top with a little cowl neck and a black waist tie.  I just think it's really cute and the waist tie is flattering.  I like that you can adjust the top to be more off-the-shoulder or more low-cut in front based how you pull the draping.  I'll probably wear it with equestrian inspired boots and jeans or with a black pencil skirt and a cardigan for work and such.




In unrelated news, I finally got around to reading A Vintage Affair by Isabel Wolff.  A friend recommended it to me like forever ago, and I hit up the library this past weekend to get a bunch of books (I'm like a kid in a candy store there) and grabbed this.  It's about a mid-thirties girl named Phoebe Swift who quits her job at Sotheby's to start a vintage clothing store.  There's some personal development/romance/history stuff in the background, but the part that really fascinated me was reading about all the vintage clothes and their stories, especially these 4 American prom dresses.  They're all different colors and Phoebe sees all these different girls try them on but each dress has a specific girl that it 'belongs' with and it's fun to see how the girls and the dresses end up together.  It's a fun, light but not trashy book that you can read in an afternoon.  Warning, however: it will make you want to buy a LOT of vintage clothes.

New Wardrobe Staple

I did something for the first time today.  I bought a backup of a pair of jeans.  I know.  I've never bought 2 of the same pair of jeans before because I've always had some sort of small problem that keeps me from repurchasing.  But with this pair...nothing.  No problems.  And they're a pair of skinny jeans!  It's like the world is ending.

7 For Mankind Gwenevere in Antoinette Darling, $189 at revolveclothing.com, J. Crew Lace-Stripe Tissue Tee, $58 at jcrew.com: I picked up another pair of these 7s on eBay.  If you're like me and you love designer jeans but not the price tag, I can't recommend eBay enough.  I got this pair for over $100 off.  The key is finding out what size in a brand and what cut fits you, and then you can buy a pair from that brand with trying them on.  Success!  What I love about these jeans is that they're stretchy enough to be comfy but thick enough to be supportive, the dark wash is flattering, the high rise doesn't cut into my hip...padding, and the skinny leg works really well with boots.  These are my new wardrobe staple.  I legit wear them every day.  Today I'd like to pair them with a cute-with-a-twist tee, like this lace paneled one from J. Crew.  The slight sheerness gives it a hint of interest, and the off-white hue is very flattering.  I like to do a slightly more voluminous top with a skinnier jean like this pair to balance everything out.




Frye Carmen Short Harness Boots, $298 at fryeboots.com, LOT78 Siouxie Leather Biker Jacket, $860 at net-a-porter.com: I've been wearing those jeans with these boots non-stop.  I heart them.  They've already been re-soled.  The cute, cropped width of the boot works nicely with the skinniness of the jeans, and I love the sassy, western attitude juxtaposed with the sweet girliness of the tee.  To play off that contrast even more, I'd do a cropped leather jacket on top.  When I do a roomier top I like to do a cropped jacket to add some structure and remind the world that I have a waist.  Plus skinny jeans and a leather jacket is just the cutest, Audrey Hepburn gone bad combination.




Ray-Ban Outsider Oversized Wayfarers, $139 at revolveclothing.com, J. Crew Oval Heirloom Locket Necklace, $50 at jcrew.com: Yup, just to push the Audrey Hepburn comparison over the edge I'd add a pair of oversized Wayfarers.  The tortoiseshell is sweetly retro, the shape is very '50s chic, and the oversized nature gives them a fun, celeb-hiding-from-the-paparazzi twist.  Last but not least I'd do a vintagey-locket necklace to add a little visual weight to the lacey shirt and a fun bit of bling.




If only I owned all of these things.  Sigh.

My Precious

There's this Anthropologie dress I've been stalking down for months.  I wanted it in October, it wasn't on sale, I couldn't justify the $180 or so price tag, so I crept around the Anthropologie website for months, waiting for it to go on sale.  And then it disappeared off the website and I thought all hope was lost (so dramatic, I know).


Then on a random shopping trip last week, I wandered into Anthropologie and BAM.  My dress, on sale for half off, in my size.  I couldn't not buy it, right?  I absolutely love it.  It's an a-line cut with a fitted waist, sweetheart neckline, a tan and white striped fabric with a blue print and a cute little waist tie.  There are two things that really get me about this dress.  The first is that the quality is very high.  The fabric is thick and sturdy, there are large fabric allowances in all the seams, the skirt has multiple layers so it actually flares out like a real a-line, just little things like that that make me feel like I got my money's worth.  The second is that the fit is really, really flattering if you have a silhouette like mine--very, very hourglassy.  I wish it was a bit smaller through the waist, but it actually fits my chest, which never happens, so I'm not complaining.



Here I'm wearing it with my Frye Carmen Short boots, which are sadly at the cobbler now getting new heels.  I don't really have a lot of occasions to wear this dress now in Boston, but just looking at it reminds me of spring and makes me so happy.  It's part country western, part retro '50s, and just really fun.

Outfit of the Day

It hit 50 degrees today.  Woohoo!  So that means sundresses.  Yup.  I wore a sundress in 50 degree weather and felt nice and warm.  I hate what the east coast has done to me.  I apologize for my failtastic photographic skills, but the main point of this outfit was that the boots and the dress look really cute together.  I added the trench/blazer to balance out all the western girliness.

How To: Rock a Fur Stole

The lovely Joeybunny asked me to do a post on how to wear a fur stole, which was ironically coincidental as literally when she asked me I was standing in front of my closet staring at a fur stole I've never managed to wear out.  First off, I have to say as a vegetarian I'm not a huge fan of the fur industry, but since this was inherited I feel like if no one wears it then the animal died for no reason (just my opinion).


So I feel like when you wear a fur stole you need to either go one of 2 directions: either go full out and wear it with a cocktail dress and heels like it was intended, or do the rock and roll glam thing and wear it with jeans and a tee.  As a college student, option B is a heck of a lot more practical, so that's what I went with.


Here I'm wearing an ASTARS tee, 7 For All Mankind Gwenevere jeans, Frye Carmen Short Boots, a vintage fur stole, and Tiffany's jewelry.  I'm also wearing a big Forever 21 necklace with an elephant face on it but for some reason it got swallowed up by the fur.




So my logic behind this outfit (yes, sadly, there was logic) was that you don't want to fight with the fur.  Clearly it's going to be the star of the outfit.  I'm not a flashy person when it comes to clothes (wearing a fur stole on campus is pretty over the top for where I go to school) so I kept the shirt in a neutral color.  I like the juxtaposition between the casual shirt and the glam stole, but they also go so well together because they drape so nicely.  I did dark jeans really because they're more flattering and because I think dark denim is a little more rock and roll than light, no?  And then I did the boots, which are terribly hard to see, my bad, because they add a casual edge to the outfit but they're sassy enough to stand up to the fur stole and not let it completely take over the outfit.  One of the things you have to accept in this situation is that you're not going to get a practical outfit out of this.  Short sleeves and fur?  Ridiculous, but cool looking in a devil-may-care sort of way.  You could probably do a long sleeved shirt here, but I don't actually own any--I have crazy neuroses about things touching my wrists--and I tried layered it over a leather jacket, but that was just too much.

Currently Loving: KAIN Pocket Tank

About a week ago I ordered a KAIN Pocket Tank on super, super sale from Tobi.com.  It was originally $80 and I got it for $15 in the color Magic Spell, which is a lovely medium lavender.  I took it out of the box, immediately loved it, and bought another one in Amalfi Red online yesterday.  I've wanted a KAIN tank forever, but couldn't justify the price tag.  However, at about $20 a pop, they're an amazing deal.  They're one size fits all, which could be problematic for some, but it fits me surprisingly well.  There's a pocket on the right side, and the fabric is a mixture of modal and silk, so it's very soft and drapes perfectly (this also means that they're very fragile, so hand-wash only).  Here I'm wearing it with a C&C California sweater, a Tiffany's necklace, 7 For All Mankind jeans, and Frye boots.




And here's a slightly blurry (sorry!) photo of just the tank.  As you can see, it's slightly transparent, which doesn't bother me but makes it not work appropriate.  But it's just so, so comfy.  There are still a ton of colors on sale, including a really pretty mauve.




All in all, I love these tanks.  They're a great basic wardrobe staple, they come in a lot of colors, they're very comfortable, and they go with basically anything.  Aside from how fragile these are, there are no downsides here.

Hunter White Tiger Welly Socks

I hate snow.  Whenever it snows back here it seems like the postal service has a complete meltdown and then the online purchases I've been consistently stalking don't get here and it makes me very sad.  But my Hunter White Tiger Welly Socks that I ordered from Zappos just came in and they are AWESOME.


Welly socks are really fleece liners made for Hunter boots to make them warm and snuggly.  They come in medium and large (I haven't seen small yet) and I'm a size 10 so I got the large.  They're a little loose around my calves, but they fit nicely in my boots.  I wouldn't wear socks under these because it would just get too complicated and bulky, and you need to put these on like socks--i.e. put the welly socks on and then put on the boots.  Don't put the socks in the boots and then try to put them on.  Does not work out.  Anyways, I got the ones with the giant white tiger cuffs made out of faux fur.  They're so plush and cozy.  I love them.  Oh, and see the little Hunter logo on the front of the socks?  I'm such a label whore, but it makes me happy.




I have gotten so many comments on these, especially for only having worn them twice.  When I pulled them out of the box I had a moment of "omg these are ridiculous why did I order them???" but I love them.  They keep my feet so, so warm in the snow, so they work on a functional level, and they look like I belong in the Russian tundra 100 years ago, which is kind of amazing.  I feel like a Romanov wearing these.  In a good way.


The long story short: I highly recommend these.  They're comfortable, they fit a variety of calf sizes (my dancer roomie tried them and they fit over her wider calves too), they keep your feet warm, and they look fabulous.  You can get them for $40 at Zappos.com.

My New Frye Babies

Sorry for the posting fail yesterday.  I was on the plane most of the day, and then when I got back the internet was out, and then I had to get up ridiculously early to go get tests run on my stomach and THEN (it doesn't end) I was knocked out most of the morning from all the sedatives.  Fun times.  But on the plus side, my Frye boots came!  And I have lots of pictures!

I love them.  I love, love, love, love LOVE them.  They are the Short Carmen Harness boots, and they are fabulous.  The finish of the leather is a little more rugged, the sassy harness and upturned toe add a cowgirl flair, the 2.5 inch heel is just enough to make you feel a little more pulled together than usual, but not so tall that it makes your feet hurt, and basically they're perfect.  I really want to wear them with little sundresses, but I left them all at school, so I couldn't take any pictures of that for you guys.  :(  Oh, and I got these from Zappos.  Which I do love, but UPS took FOREVER to get them here.  And then literally dropped them off an hour after I left for the airport to go to Oregon for the weekend.  Grrrr.



 However, I did do two outfits with my new babies.  In this first one I'm wearing a Walter jacket, 7 For All Mankind jeans (my new Gwenevere ones!), a J. Crew tank, and the Frye boots, of course.  I got the J. Crew tank for $25, and it was originally $70.  Score!  It's an olive green base with tons and tons of bronzey sequins stitched on.  It's a little big on me, but I love the heavily gilded look of it too much, I couldn't turn it down.  I paired it with the leather jacket to give it some shape, and then I think the cowboy boots give it all a rugged twist that makes it all very rock and roll, no?



 The top here is ASTARS (gifted), the necklace is F21, and the jeans are 7 For All Mankind.  I'm actually going to be dying the jeans darker sometime this week (hopefully) but I really like these boots with bare legs and a very simple outfit, because I think they can speak for themselves.



Another thing I got over the weekend?  Spanx.  Specifically this pair.  They are amazing.  I don't know how I lived without them.  I got them at Nordstrom's Rack for like $30.  They had the Spanx tights too, which are great.  Definitely go check that out if there's a store near you.
